Parent-and-child swim classes in High Point, North Carolina
Backfloat teaches parent-and-child and toddler swim classes in a warm hotel pool, Monday to Friday mornings. Babies and toddlers are in the water with a parent or caregiver, and an instructor leads every class.

Four stages
Each stage has a color, an age range and a few things we practice together.
Floating on the back with a parent's hands under the head and back
Blowing bubbles and splashing
Songs and rhymes at the wall
Reaching for a toy on the surface
When a baby is walking and the parent and the instructor agree, we talk about Early toddlers.
Kicking while held at the chest
Moving along the wall with a parent's support
Climbing the steps out and back in
Blowing bubbles and pouring water with a cup
The instructor and the parent decide together when a child is ready for Toddlers.
Floating on the front and the back with support
Kicking toward a parent's hands
Picking up rings from the step
Taking a turn when the instructor calls the group
A child moves to Threes when the instructor sees they like the group and the parent agrees.
Following the instructor along the wall
Kicking with a kickboard
Floating with the instructor's hands
Waiting for a turn with the group, with a parent on the step
After Threes, the next step is a children's class at a school with its own levels. We help you find one.

Sample classes.
Every class is half an hour. A session runs six weeks.
In every class
A class is a parent and a child working together, with an instructor showing what to do. There are three jobs, and they come in this order.

Hold your child close, at your chest or along your forearm. The instructor shows the hold for each age, and it changes as your child grows.
Facing you, at your chest
Along your forearm, for floating on the back

Keep a hand under your child while they kick, reach and float. You carry the weight, and your child tries the movement.
A hand under the back or the tummy
Your voice close by
A rest whenever either of you needs one

The instructor stands in the water at the front, shows one movement and sings the song that goes with it. You copy the instructor, and your child copies you.
A circle for songs and rhymes
One movement at a time
A toy to reach for at the end
Four steps from a first message to the first morning in the water.
Call, text or send the form with your child's age. Monty or Amal answers within a day and helps you choose a stage.
Choose a morning on our enrollment page. The first visit is an ordinary class, so you can see the pool and we can see which stage fits.
Register for a session on our enrollment page. A place is held when registration is complete, and a full class has a waitlist.
Bring a towel, a snug swim diaper for a child under three and a change of clothes for you both. Arrive ten minutes early to rinse and settle.
Monty and Amal teach every class between them. Both hold the lifeguard, water-safety instructor, CPR and first aid checks.

Owner and instructor
Monty came to the pool as a grandfather with a baby in his arms. A few mornings later he asked the instructor how the class worked, and today he leads Babies and Toddlers. He keeps a bin of floating toys on the step.

Instructor
Amal leads Early toddlers and Threes. She sings the songs, learns every child's favorite toy by the second week and keeps a spare towel on the step.
By your child's age. Babies are 3 to 11 months, Early toddlers 12 to 23 months, Toddlers 2 years and Threes 3 years. At the first visit the instructor watches a class with you and suggests the stage that fits.
A snug swim diaper under swim clothes for every child under three. A swim shirt is welcome in every class. Please tie long hair back.
You are, or another parent or caregiver you choose, such as a grandparent or a nanny. The instructor leads the class from the water. In Threes the instructor is in the water with the children and parents wait on the step.
It happens, and nobody minds. We get out together and try again another day, and a missed class is made up in the same session.
Tuition depends on the stage, the mornings a week and the length of the session. Our current figures are on the enrollment page.
